It is likely to be the case that we will hear more and more of the term 'knowledge economy' in future years. However, we can argued that the term is not perfect and may actually be difficult to pin down and define. Indeed Keith Smith, in his paper 'What is the Knowledge Economy?' described the term as 'rhetorical rather than analytically useful'. This seems to be the perfect summation of the term as it appears vague, extremely fluid and not altogether useful for analysis of the skill levels of jobs being brought to an area; especially if the term is coupled with a lack of definitive data relating to local businesses. This point is echoed by a report from Lancaster University which states that 'it is difficult to substantiate knowledge intensive companies and knowledge workers as distinct, uniform categories' so drawing conclusions about changes to the knowledge economy starts from a very shaky base.

However, what we can conclude is that the term is intrinsically associated with skills and this makes training crucial to the future of the economy of the United Kingdom. This can be seen by the actions of Government which has put forward a large number of proposals in an attempt to improve the skills base of the country and reengage those that find themselves excluded or at risk of exclusion from the workplace. It is important to recognise that this focus should not simply be applied to academic qualifications and generic skills are absolutely crucial to the future of the economy. Things such as project management certification and project management courses can be considered important as they help a person to obtain the key skills that are required for improving productivity in a business.

However, the process is more complicated than just that so there are a number of things that are likely to be involved.
